Fatboy Slim Reflects on the Early Fear of Performing Sober in Latest Interview

In a deeply candid new interview, electronic music pioneer Norman Cook, globally known as Fatboy Slim, has opened up about the intense anxiety he faced when first returning to the DJ booth completely sober.

Speaking with Lauren Laverne on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, the 62-year-old "Praise You" hitmaker looked back at his nearly 15-year journey of sobriety, admitting that transitioning away from a lifestyle heavily fueled by alcohol initially left him feeling completely "paralyzed" on stage.

Overcoming the "Parasite" of Addiction

Cook, who checked into a rehabilitation facility in 2009 to battle an alcohol addiction, described addiction as a highly manipulative disease.

"Addiction is such a weird disease and it’s like a parasite—it protects its own," Cook shared during the broadcast. "It knows that if you quit, it won’t have anywhere to live anymore, so it will do things to you to keep you. Probably the last year of my drinking, I wasn’t really enjoying it, and things were starting to fall off in my life."

When asked if finding sobriety was a straightforward process after entering recovery, the Grammy-winning producer was remarkably direct. "No, absolutely not," he stated. "Probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I couldn’t have done it without going to rehab. I needed someone to bash into my head for a month, 'You’ll die, and you’ll be in misery if you don't stop doing this.'"

The Stage Anxiety Blueprint

The most striking revelation from the interview centered on the psychological hurdle of playing massive live shows without the chemical buffer of alcohol. For an artist who built his entire global brand around high-energy, chaotic club and festival environments, stepping onto a stage completely clear-headed proved to be a terrifying experience.

"For the first five shows, I was so paralyzed and rigid with fear, I couldn’t dance, and I couldn't enjoy it," Cook admitted. "I was thinking, 'What are you actually doing? Why are you going to play that record next? And why are they going to react to it?'"

The Breakthrough Moment in Japan

The turning point for the legendary DJ arrived during a tour stop in East Asia, where a highly receptive crowd stripped away his self-doubt and re-anchored his relationship with live performance.

"A beautiful night in Japan helped me to overcome my fears," Cook explained. "The crowd were just really excitable, making me realize that my job is just about making the crowd happy. Everything sort of fitted into place."

Since overcoming those initial performance anxieties, Fatboy Slim has spent the last decade and a half proving that it is entirely possible to command the world's largest festival stages, maintain an infectious energy, and connect deeply with thousands of fans while completely sober. He remains one of the most durable, beloved, and healthy fixtures on the global live music circuit today.
