Electronic Pioneers Boards of Canada Announce Comeback & New Album, "Inferno"

For 13 years, the electronic music community has lived in a state of suspended animation, waiting for the Scottish sibling duo Boards of Canada (Mike Sandison and Marcus Eoin) to emerge from the hexagonal shadows of the Highlands. That wait officially ended this week. Following a month of cryptic clues that felt like a return to the analog mysteries of the early 2000s, the duo has confirmed their fifth studio album, titled "Inferno", is set for release on May 29, 2026, via Warp Records.

The rollout has been a masterclass in psychological marketing. In early April, a handful of fans worldwide received mysterious VHS tapes in the mail, featuring distorted documentary clips, shortwave radio static, and the band's signature "seven hexagons" logo. This was followed by a series of monochromatic posters appearing in major hubs like London, Shibuya, and New York. On April 16, the band finally broke the silence with "Tape 05," a moving, 10-minute ambient piece that served as their first new music since 2013's Tomorrow’s Harvest.

The Architecture of Inferno

Inferno is an ambitious 18-track odyssey that reportedly moves away from the post-apocalyptic dread of their previous work and toward a more "celestial, mathematical" sound. The tracklist itself reads like a deep-dive into occult science and planetary physics, featuring titles like "Prophecy At 1420 MHz" (a reference to the Wow! signal) and "Hydrogen Helium Lithium Leviathan."

While the album doesn't drop for another month, the duo has announced a series of Global Listening Parties on May 22. These sessions will take place in seven cities—Tokyo, Berlin, Barcelona, London, Glasgow, New York, and Los Angeles—allowing the "cult of BoC" to hear the record in its entirety before it hits streaming and physical formats.

A Vinyl Collector's Dream

Warp Records is pulling out all the stops for what will undoubtedly be the biggest electronic release of the year. The physical rollout includes:

  • Special Edition Vinyl: A limited-run, translucent red 2xLP housed in a triple gatefold sleeve with a 16-page booklet of analog photography.
  • The "Shortwave" Bonus: Rumors suggest that certain physical copies may contain hidden digital watermarks or QR codes leading to unreleased archival stems.

The news has sent the secondary market for the band's back catalog into a tailspin, with original pressings of Music Has the Right to Children and Geogaddi seeing a 40% price surge on Discogs in the last 48 hours. For an industry currently obsessed with high-speed digital trends, Boards of Canada’s slow, deliberate return is a reminder that some things are worth the 13-year wait.
