Sir Anthony Hopkins Traces Six Decades of Composition on Landmark Decca Classics Debut 'Life Is A Dream'

Two-time Academy Award-winning actor Sir Anthony Hopkins has officially launched his debut album for Decca Classics, Life Is A Dream, delivering a 12-track orchestral retrospective that captures over six decades of private compositional work.

Recorded at Alexandra Palace with the Philharmonia Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Gustavo Dudamel, the landmark project stands as an autobiographical sonic memoir. Rather than framing the release as a celebrity crossover, the album presents Hopkins as a lifelong symphonist whose musical roots predated his iconic screen career.

A Lifetime of Composition: From Port Talbot to Repertory Theater

Spanning 67 minutes of original orchestral arrangements, Life Is A Dream gathers pieces conceived across vastly different eras of Hopkins' life. The works draw heavily on his childhood in the industrial suburb of Margam in Port Talbot, South Wales, capturing personal nostalgia and emotional landscapes:

  • The 1943 Childhood Roots: Tracks like "Margam" and "My Fatherland" serve as symphonic tributes to his Welsh upbringing, blending lush string arrangements with traditional choral textures supplied by The Bach Choir and the Boy Choristers of Winchester Cathedral.
  • The 1963 Liverpool Beginnings: The album's centerpiece single, "Bracken Road"—part of his 1947: Suite for Solo Piano and Orchestra—was originally written while Hopkins was a young repertory actor at the Liverpool Playhouse. The piece captures the physical landscape surrounding his childhood home through sweeping piano passages performed by Sergio Tiempo.
  • The Theater Years & European Waltzes: Included in the collection is "And the Waltz Goes On," a haunting, light-classical movement written in his early theater days that later gained global attention after being recorded by violinist André Rieu.
  • Philosophical Showpieces: The record concludes with two expansive tone poems, "The Eagle" and "Samsara," inspired by classical Arabic poetry and Somerset Maugham’s fable The Appointment in Samarra, featuring expressive solos from Venezuelan cellist Gregorio Nieto.

A Personal Passion Realized on the Charts

For Hopkins, who began playing piano as a child and has referred to music as his primary creative ambition, signing with Decca Classics represents the fulfillment of a lifelong pursuit.

The album’s critical and commercial reception has mirrored its artistic ambitions, soaring directly to No. 1 on the Official UK Classical Chart within a week of its release.

"My true passion was always music," Hopkins shared regarding the release. "Some of these pieces have lived with me for decades, rooted in the landscapes of my childhood. Seeing them brought to life with such grace by Maestro Dudamel and the Philharmonia is the honor of a lifetime."

By assembling six decades of quiet composition into a singular major-label project, Life Is A Dream establishes Hopkins’ musical output not as a late-career curiosity, but as a fully realized parallel career spanning a lifetime.
