Olivia Rodrigo Quietly Drops Ultra-Limited 'Serena Joy' CD Single

Pop superstar Olivia Rodrigo has executed a surprise physical drop, quietly releasing an unreleased track titled "Serena Joy" as an ultra-limited CD single exclusively through an independent brick-and-mortar shop in Southern California.

Pressing a run of just 500 physical copies, Rodrigo partnered directly with Analog Music Shop in Tustin, California—located roughly eight miles from Irvine's Great Park, the site of her upcoming all-women music festival, Daisy Chain Fields.

All 500 copies sold out within hours of the shop opening on Friday.

Mobilizing Fans and Directing Foot Traffic to Independent Retail

By bypassing digital pre-saves and major online retailers for the initial release, Rodrigo’s grassroots drop served as a targeted initiative to channel foot traffic and local awareness directly into community record stores.

  • Grassroots Announcement: Analog Music Shop served as the exclusive megaphone for the release, revealing on Instagram that Rodrigo's team offered them a three-day physical window before the track hits global streaming services.
  • Immediate Local Sell-Out: Lines formed within minutes of the shop’s social media post, exhausting the entire 500-unit inventory before the evening.
  • Charity Mission Alignment: All proceeds from the $6 CD single were directed to benefit local nonprofit organizations for women and girls in coordination with Daisy Chain Fields.

A Deliberate Non-Album Outtake

"Serena Joy" was originally recorded during sessions for Rodrigo's third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love. While a prototype tracklist leaked in June revealed the song's existence, Rodrigo previously explained in interviews that the track was intentionally cut because its themes didn't fit her record's chronological relationship narrative.

By utilizing an independent store partnership to unearth the outtake, Rodrigo reinforced her ongoing advocacy for physical media and local record shops—a strategy she previously utilized during Record Store Day drops and her GUTS tour pop-ups.

"We knew Olivia had a track record of supporting record stores, but we were still taken aback when we heard the news," Analog Music Shop stated in a public message. "An artist building a stage for women in music and raising funds for women and girls, while giving us the music three days before anyone else can hear it."

The song is expected to receive its wide global release across digital and streaming platforms on Monday, August 24, ahead of the Daisy Chain Fields festival lineup next weekend.
