Celebrating two decades since cementing their status as one of British pop-rock’s most defining 2000s acts, Keane has officially released a comprehensive 20th-anniversary reissue of their milestone sophomore album, Under the Iron Sea.
Released via Universal Music Recordings, the expanded edition honors the June 2006 record that debuted at Number 1 on the UK Albums Chart and sold over three million copies worldwide. Following the global phenomenon of their 2004 debut Hopes and Fears, the album proved that the East Sussex trio—frontman Tom Chaplin, keyboardist and primary songwriter Tim Rice-Oxley, and drummer Richard Hughes—could expand their piano-driven sonic palette into darker, richer, and far more experimental terrain.
Unearthing the Vaults: Demos, B-Sides, and Live Cuts
The centerpiece of the 20th-anniversary celebration is a deluxe 3CD configuration that pairs the original 12-track album—newly remastered at London's iconic Abbey Road Studios—with two extensive discs of rare, unreleased studio material and historical live performances.
The secondary disc offers fans a rare glimpse into the album’s intense creative evolution, gathering fan-favorite B-sides alongside original 2004–2005 home cassette and studio demos written by Tim Rice-Oxley. Highlights include early, raw iterations of chart hits like "Is It Any Wonder?" and "A Bad Dream," unreleased studio sketches, and rare covers of classic tracks like The Cult's "She Sells Sanctuary" and Queen and David Bowie's "Under Pressure."
The third disc acts as a retrospective live chronicle of Keane at the absolute peak of their mid-2000s touring powers. Gathering performances from 2005 through 2010, the set captures memorable festival runs, intimate venue sessions at the London Astoria and ULU, and massive stadium moments at The O2 Arena. Notable highlights include a guest performance of "Try Again" featuring singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright from Wireless Festival 2005, and a spoken-word performance of "An Irishman Foresees His Death" alongside The Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon.
A Modern Collector's Physical Edition
For physical media enthusiasts and vinyl collectors, Universal Music has also rolled out a specialized Zoetrope picture disc vinyl pressing.
Mastered at half-speed at Abbey Road to ensure optimal audio clarity, the limited-edition record utilizes specialized animation designs across both sides. Created alongside graphic designer Drew Tetz, the visual patterns bring Finnish illustrator Sanna Annukka Smith’s original, fairy-tale-inspired album artwork to life in mesmerizing rotational motion as the record spins on the turntable.
