Six years after their chaotic, internet-shattering joint project UNLOCKED took over underground hip-hop, Florida lyrical heavyweight Denzel Curry and producer Kenneth Blume (fka Kenny Beats) have officially reunited for their long-awaited sequel, ii.
Released via Loma Vista Recordings, the 9-track, 24-minute project acts as a direct spiritual successor to their 2020 cult classic. However, where their first outing was built on frantic, impromptu studio sessions, ii captures two established industry veterans stepping into their 30s, using raw boom-bap production to interrogate legacy, artistic longevity, and independence.
Maturing Chemistry and the Weight of Legacy
Since 2020, both artists have reached new commercial and creative heights. Curry spent recent years refining his introspective storytelling on Melt My Eyez See Your Future alongside leading underground supergroups like The Scythe, while Blume expanded his production portfolio into alternative rock, post-punk, and high-profile collaborative records.
Returning to the booth together, the duo uses ii to reflect on what it means to build an enduring catalog without sacrificing artistic integrity:
- Revisiting the UNLOCKED Blueprint: Rather than chasing mainstream radio trends, ii leans into heavy, sample-packed boom-bap, aggressive drum loops, and unfiltered vocal takes reminiscent of MF DOOM, RZA, and Madlib.
- The Legacy Paradigm: Across standout tracks like "COLD NIGHT IN HELL" and "PRODUCT," Curry weighs his transition into a veteran mentor role against the pressure to sustain his success, famously noting in promotional visual essays that real impact isn't measured by industry hardware.
- Selective, High-Value Guest Spots: To complement the album's gritty narrative arc, the pair brought in sharp contributions from kindred spirits JPEGMAFIA on "EVIL GRIN," Westside Gunn on "CROWN," and soulful vocal lines from Yebba on "DIFFERENCE".
Unfiltered Studio Tension Yields Veteran Polish
Despite both creators evolving into trusted authorities within hip-hop, the recording process for ii retained the sharp edge that made their partnership famous. Blume’s production strips away gloss in favor of distorted samplers, raw chops, and heavy vinyl grit, serving as the ideal backdrop for Curry’s rapid-fire delivery.
In commentary accompanying the rollout, the duo touched on how their dynamic has evolved from fast-paced experimentation to a deliberate statement on artistic endurance:
"DOOM never won a Grammy, but he's a legend, right?" Curry reflected during the album's promotional release film, framing the project's thesis. "This project is about having fun, talking our talk, and knowing exactly where we stand in the culture without needing validation from anybody else."
